What Brings You Joy?
One sure way that has been proven to cultivate joy is through sharing it.
Joy is the feeling of happiness that you choose to let go to. Just like other positive emotions such as love, joy likes it when you choose it and then share it.
When shared, it gets compounded and who does not love compounded interest? I know I do. It has made the idea of investing fun and something I look forward to as I see my money growing. Joy grows as much as you share it.
Take a moment and think, what brings you joy?
It could be travelling, the idea of new places, new people, new food does bring freshness to life.
Sitting down with family over a meal and to see them munching over the deliciousness, talking, sharing and laughing can get you smiling.
Or is it as simple as having an organised desk, wardrobe or to do list and ticking it away as you finish the tasks like me? Whatever it is, I know it’s all the merrier when you share it with someone. This is why social media is so popular.
Tiny Joyous Habits
The other side to this is also true. You could be engaging in these things but have no joy to share. Here are some of the ways you could build and cultivate joy:
-
- What are three things you could say are going right for you now? Are you able to read this, listen to it and think through it? Already you have three parts and senses of your body that are working well that you can focus on. We humans tend to focus on the bad more than we see the good, probably a survival habit but good exists in the world five more times than bad. Make it a continuous habit to notice two good things that are happening for every one bad thing you notice.
- Find ways of being in the presence of those that make you happy and giddy. It could be kids, when you play with kids or respond to their questions you have all the positive emotions. It could be animals that make you feel the world is good. It could be nature, when you soak in the beauty of flowers and the green of the plants, you feel a boost. Do more of that as often as possible, being selfish to carve time for these moments.
- When you wake up, mention two things that you are grateful for and say them out loud. This way your mind is not questioning your reality as you are telling it what you know to be true. You have so much in your life but you might never see it if you do not take the time to acknowledge these blessings in your life.
- Do you know what brings you joy? If you are like me and on a journey to full self awareness, write down five to ten things that bring you joy. Then, purpose to do one or two everyday. My list include; Learning new things, feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin in the mornings and evenings, watching the sun rise or set, stargazing, looking at trees – true wealth is in the number of trees you have I believe, enjoying the colors and beauty of flowers, the crackling sound of dried leaves when I step on them, making merry with friends and family, the ocean and it’s sand, a hug of a loved one and pampering of my body.
These are tiny habits that make your life a joy. Most of them are free and do not need money to be enjoyed. If you would like your joy to last, share it around. Share the knowledge, share the cake, share the information and see the appreciation you that comes with it. You deserve the interest as much as the other person. Go forth and find joy.
